bigholiday 356 The XRT/Bud Light BIG Holiday Concert

There was a festive atmosphere at the cavernous Allstate Arena Friday night as a good crowd (many in costume) gathered for the first ever 93XRT Bud Light Big Holiday Concert. Not only was it a crisp snowy evening filled with the joy of the season and the first night of the Festival of Lights, but everyone was anticipating a wonderful show of some of the world’s most compelling and adventurous bands. They were not disapointed. The pride of Oklahoma City, The Flaming Lips, took the stage with a blast of giant balloons. confetti cannons and lead singer Wayne Coyne rolling into the audience in his man sized globe. Weird catfish and butterfly creatures along with furry outfitted stage crew bracketed the band as they ran thru spirited versions of “She Don’t Use Jelly,” “Do You Realize,” “Silver Trembling Hands” (from their latest “Embryonic”) and even a little “White Christmas.” Co-headliners Phoenix had to perform without their drummer due to a family emergency, but they treated their fans to a brief but heartfelt acoustic set that included recent hits “1901″ and “Lisztomania.” Pete Yorn played a solid sample of his catchy catalog, even throwing in a version of New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle,” and if you can’t get the CSO, the Nicholas Tremulis Orchestra will get things started just fine. The memories of this show will keep us going during the difficult, frosty days to come.
