I don’t know if it is a good idea to advise children to become English majors. I’m a teacher and jobs are disappearing because administrators are having difficulty balancing their budgets!

Not every English Major wants to be a teacher (although it comes up frequently). Written communication skills are useful for other professions; and after sifting through some of the hardest pieces of literature, other professional texts aren’t difficult to understand and apply.

One of the great english quotes of all time, ” A “D” in english…Bobby, you speak english.” (King of the Hill)

I was the first person in my entire family to go to college and my parents NEVER made me feel that there was anything wrong with my decision to major in English (thank God!) They simply understood that there was nothing that I would make me happier than studying literature. I’m five years out of college and I wouldn’t change it for anything. English is fabulous!

English majors do very well in business development, corporate communications, proposals, etc. I was an English major and I grateful every day for the chance to earn the living I do as a result of my education.

    “…and I grateful…” or “…and I am grateful…”? An English sentence requires both a subject and a verb.

      …or, “I be grateful…” still a verb!

I am an English major and I have no intention of becoming a teacher after I graduate in a month. My degree will allow me to pretty much do whatever I want, and that fact is pretty daunting.

The study of literature won’t help you buy the giant house or the flashy car, but it can teach you those aren’t the best things to want. I think Schiller said that, but in slightly different words.
