Jack White makes a 45 with the Queen of Rockabily
Wanda Jackson, appearing this Friday at FitzGerald’s, has a new record produced by Jack White. A single, as in a 7″ vinyl record that goes around a turntable at 45rpm and has a big hole in the center.
Just a few years ago Jack White had a great success producing an album for Loretta Lynn, Van Lear Rose. This year he’s made a new two-sided single with the woman called The Rockabilly Filly. Wanda Jackson was a feisty young woman from Oklahoma in the an era when being that independent was considered rebellious. She was not only a peer of Elvis Presley but often shared the bill with the King in his early days and even dated Elvis for awhile. Now she’s touring with a brand new record, the Jack White production of her covering Amy Winehouse‘s, “You Know I’m No Good.”
Here’s a couple of videos of the song, including a live one where, as my friend Sheila Russell says, “Wanda’s just being Wanda.”
Here’s some old school Wanda.
