112 Phil Spector Biopic... To Know Him Is To Love Him?HBO films plans to produce a biopic on the legendary, and crazy, producer, [lastfm]Phil Spector[/lastfm]. And they got Al Pacino to play Phil. Wow. I can’t wait to see him in those wigs when they get to the murder trial.

But what a tragic story. Made for TV. Phil had so much talent and produced some of the best records ever. But decades ago it was obvious he had issues. He married one of his stars, Ronnie Bennett of the [lastfm]Ronettes[/lastfm]. I had the pleasure of interviewing her at The Fest For Beatles Fans a couple of years ago. I didn’t want to dwell on the nightmare Phil stories.

They are well documented. But she did say she was a prisoner in her own home. I remember in the sixties, seeing a photo of Phil’s estate in a fan magazine, with barbed wire, high walls, warning signs and guard dogs. Not only to keep everyone out, but to keep Ronnie in. The article said she was a prisoner in her own home. She related how Phil would never let her leave, even to go shopping or work. The year the Ronettes toured with the Beatles, Phil hired a lead vocalist. He didn’t trust Ronnie on the road. Finally, her Mother came to visit and helped her escape. Phil didn’t let her wear shoes around the house so she wouldn’t try to escape, but Ronnie said she would have walked barefoot over broken bottles to get out of there. She said her Mother gave her live and saved her life. Before her escape she credits [lastfm]John Lennon[/lastfm] and [lastfm]Keith Richards[/lastfm] for trying to talk some sense into Phil. But he refused.

It will be interesting to see how the film covers his time with Ronnie and his interaction with [lastfm]The Beatles[/lastfm]. It’s quite a story. Hope they do a good job telling it.

I am happy to hear that Al Pacino will play Phil Spector. Pacino is the greatest of actors at this time. I love all his work.
