Like 93XRT’s The Eclectic Company, Spectacle: Elvis Costello with… offers the kind of insight into the world of musicians that could only come from them being interviewed by a fellow musician.  With Elvis’ show the interaction with the guests also includes a live performance with the visiting musicians.

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Elton John[/lastfm] was the first guest on the first season of Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…, the final show of the second season featured [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Bruce Springsteen[/lastfm] and in between we saw [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Lou Reed[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Lyle Lovett[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Sheryl Crow[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Tony Bennett[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]James Taylor[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Police[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Rufus Wainwright[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kris Kristofferson[/lastfm],[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] She & Him[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Diana Krall[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Smokey Robinson[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Bono [/lastfm]and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Edge[/lastfm] and others.  Now Elvis is expressing concern that it will be difficult to continue to book guests of this caliber.  Here’s what he recently told Spinner:

“At the moment, we’re waiting to see whether we go forward with the same sort of degree of confidence; I don’t want to do something that’s inferior. And it is difficult. If you look at the list of the people that we did [in the first two seasons], and then you think of some of the people that people might theorize that you would like to get, well, it’s whether they would want to do it, you know? And I know that with some of the people that you’d love to speak to, there are reasons why they don’t feel right about doing something like Spectacle, or the timing isn’t right in their life and career. So I think that it’s got to be in the right circumstances.”

I urge Elvis Costello to host a third season of Spectacle. The episodes with Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Bono and The Edge were must-sees. When U2 first released ‘Get On Your Boots’, I thought, “That sounds a lot like Costello’s ‘Pump It Up’.” Sure enough, Elvis, Bono and The Edge perform a mash-up of these two songs on Spectacle and I’m yelling, “Hey honey, c’mon, listen to this!” Highlights of the show include Elvis covering guests’ songs and guest covering Elvis’ songs. Surely there’s enough musical talent and interest to keep this Spectacle going.

Spectacle is so refreshing and Elvis I do hope you come back with Season 3! An invitation to sit down and not only listen to great music without distractions, but also see the songwriter/ artist interviewed and drawn out by someone who knows the right questions to ask. Thoughtful discussions about the creative process. It’s like a cold glass of water on a hot day!
