Photos: MGMTSPIN is offering a free playlist for their “Best of 2010” issue. Every one of these . This list is comprised of some of the top indies of the year that were were debuted on XRT’s The Big Beat. These 16 free tracks cover a lot of ground, from Yeasayer to Sleighbells to Spoon. We have a few that we want to bring your attention to.
“Written in Reverse” from Spoon: This song is track five on their seventh studio album, Transference, that was released back in January. It’s full of staccato piano, tense bass lines, and Britt Daniel’s raw vocals.
“Boyfriend” from Best Coast: “Boyfriend” is the opening track on Best Coast’s debut album titled, Crazy For You was released in July. The song speaks to just about every girl out there who has wanted someone who’s taken…and then thinking that they just can’t measure up to person that he’s seeing. The song is reminiscent of 90’s radio rock, but slightly updated.
“Brian Eno” from MGMT: This tribute song to British musician and producer Brian Eno takes the listener on a journey to a cathedral where Brian Eno advises with his infinite wisdom. When asked about it, the real Brian Eno said that he was quite flattered by the tribute.
“King of the Beach” by Wavves: One of the things that Wavves did not want to do with King of the Beach was to record the same album, so their sound changed just a bit—but they’re still the same surf-noise-pop band you know.
“Helicopter” by Deerhunter: As Pitchfork.com put it, it’s “ugly beauty” and that “very few are doing it as well as these guys.”
You can find all 16 tracks here.
Just an FYI: You’ll need iTunes to get the playlist and the download code expires at the end of January.
