[lastfm]The Kinks[/lastfm] had just played a blazing XRT Show (the “State of Confusion” tour, if memory serves) and Tom Marker and I went backstage at the UIC Pavilion to enlist the voice of lead singer [lastfm]Ray Davies[/lastfm] for our annual Christmas radio special. Our friend Hudson captured the encounter on his high quality portable reel-to-reel tape recorder (look it up) and it sounded like this:

    And here it is, the BEST moment of the BEST song on the BEST album of 2010. A weary James Mercer tries to convince himself, “It’s not too late to feel a little more alive…” and Danger Mouse turns sentiment into sound: a 1984 keyboard line and, lo and behold, a trumpet. It’s hard to describe, awesome to behold. So bizarrely beautiful, I “needle drop” onto that sucker every other night.
