Tomorrow the Green Grass

cb 125211 Video: The Jayhawks At Chicagos Vic TheatreTomorrow the Green Grass was the focus of the second night of [lastfm]The Jayhawks[/lastfm]’ two XRT shows at the Vic Theatre.  Their fourth album begins with as strong a one-two punch as any album I can think of.  “Blue” followed by “I’d Run Away.”  There were a number of years that Jayhawks’ fans had no reason to believe that this band would reunite or that we would hear Gary Louris and Mark Olson’s voices together on a stage.

Profoundly talented songwriters with singing voices to match, Gary and Mark along with familiar faces Mark Perlman on bass and Karen Grotberg on keyboards are planning an album of new material for a summer release.  In fact it was a new song called “She Walks in So Many Ways” that stood out as a highlight of a show filled with highlights.  Chicago Sun-Times reviewer, Mark Guarino, hit the mark when he commented that their harmonies had “a kind of  Midwestern mysticism to them.”  It makes me think Gram Parsons didn’t die in vain.

If you missed the concert, you may have to wait for the tour that would follow a new album.  However, we can share Gary and Mark’s appearance Live From Studio X with Marty Lennartz on Friday, January 28th.
