First Listen: Gossip Girl, Beth Ditto's Solo EP

bethditto First Listen: Gossip Girl, Beth Ditto's Solo EP

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Gossip[/lastfm] singer-gone-solo Beth Ditto‘s upcoming EP is a brew of vocal-house and modern soul laced with romanticized synths.   Produced by UK dance duo and production pioneers [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Simian Mobile Disco[/lastfm], Ditto’s latest will make you go, “Ooooo-wee, that’s funky, let’s dance!”

Opening with “I Wrote the Book,” the first single from her solo EP (available March 8th, 2011) is brimming with bouncy beats and ’90s fanfare highlighting the early sounds of house music from the likes of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Rozalla[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Black Box[/lastfm],[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] C+C Music Factory[/lastfm] that no doubt influenced the diva. “Good Night Good Morning” has a summery feel to it, electro-leaning drum pads coated with a poppy bounce and vocals primed to move a crowd while “Open Heart Surgery” injects heart and depth into a genre that is often soulless. And, then there’s “Do You Need Someone” featuring sexy percussion and shadowy beats served straight up. Overall, if her tracks could be visually seen, they’d be wearing fairy wings and trying to get everyone up off the wall.

Recorded in the UK, SMD (James Ford and Jas Shaw) both co-wrote and took production duties on the EP, capturing a softer evocative side to Beth’s powerful vocals with sassy beats. Listen to an exclusive premiere of the EP below.

Beth Ditto EP Track List:

  1. I Wrote the Book
  2. Good Night Good Morning
  3. Open Heart Surgery
  4. Do You Need Someone
