linterri Diary: Opening Day With XRT
diary1 Diary: Opening Day With XRTAfter a brief break, it feels great to be back in the XRT office. I missed being around the exciting world of radio, but I sure didn’t miss this Chicago non-spring weather. The agonizing trickery of the weather is just a tradeoff of living in such a great city, I suppose. But it seems like spring is just about to blossom, with tell-tale signs like baseball season starting up.
On Friday I was able to attend XRT’s Cubs Opening Day live broadcast. The event took place at Yak-Zies on Clark, which is about a block from Wrigley Field. This year was the nineteenth anniversary of our live broadcast, and most of the fans who showed up were definitely not first-timers to the event.

[photogallerylink id=71429 align=left]There were people lining up at the door by 6 am just to nab their collectable t-shirt. I didn’t mind the 5 am call, but it was a strange feeling to be driving around the city and seeing people still stumbling home from the night before and then greeting people an hour later to start the party all over. As always, my favorite part about the events I get to participate in are the fans that show up. Everyone was super excited for both the game and the live broadcast, and in no time the bar was packed. It was pretty difficult to navigate around without accidently bumping someone. While there, the promotions team and I were giving away some awesome stuff that everyone wanted to get their hands on: t-shirts, XRT coozies, Fisher nuts, Vienna Beef hats, and the chance to win tickets to see Eddie Vedder at the Chicago Theatre this summer. Let me tell you, those were some premium giveaways.
The broadcast started at 6 am with Lin Brehmer and Mary Dixon doing the morning show. In addition to our own superstars, NBC Channel 5 news was also present and broadcasting. Yours truly was able to sneak on a little background camera time – maybe this will lead to my big break into showbiz. So Lin did a live Lin’s Bin on if he believed in miracles, the Regular Guy showed up to say an opening prayer, and then Terri took over at 10 to do her show and announce the winners of the Eddie Vedder tickets. Now, it wasn’t just so simple that their raffle ticket was pulled and then they won. If they were lucky enough to have their ticket pulled, the finalists then had to go onstage and answer some trivia about Eddie Vedder in order to win the tickets. Talk about proving your fan status! Also in attendance was a very convincing Ditka imposter.
Unfortunately, I heard the Cubs lost their opening game. Hey, it was only one game! They’ve got the rest of the season ahead of them, right? Thursday will be the Sox’s first home game, and XRT will be present there as well. Maybe this season I’ll be able to attend my first baseball game EVER… A girl can hope!
