Plant & Emmylou Share A Buddy

Robert Plant’s Band of Joy guitarist is the incomparable [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Buddy Miller[/lastfm].  His atmospherically virtuosic guitar solos on Plant’s latest album notwithstanding, Buddy is best known as the pre-eminent progressive Nashville guitar picker.   As such he has been one of Emmylou Harris’ favorite collaborators.  He toured with Emmylou, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Patty Griffin[/lastfm], and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Shawn Colvin[/lastfm] under the banner, Three Girls and Their Buddy.

You might envy Buddy for his talent.  I envy him because in that video Emmylou Harris calls him “the best Buddy a girl could ever have.”  Buddy Miller’s Majestic Silver Strings is his newest project and guitar nerds might want to sit down before they hear who’s in the line-up.  Contemporary jazz guitar master [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Bill Frisell[/lastfm], session wizard [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Marc Ribot[/lastfm], and pedal steel legend [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Greg Leisz[/lastfm] all join Mr. Miller for an old fashioned country guitar pull with a very modern feel.

You might have heard Emmylou’s new tribute to Gram Parsons on the XRT Morning Show this morning.  It’s a song called “The Road” from her soon to be released CD, Hard Bargain. Imagine if Emmylou went looking for Buddy Miller after her show and wound up jamming with Robert Plant and his Band of Joy.  If they do, give me a call.

If you’ve never heard of the Cayamo Cruise, go to It’s a music festival disguised as a Caribbean cruise. The headliners have included John Hiatt, Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle, John Prine, the Indigo Girls, Patty Griffin, Emmylou, Brandi Carlile, Shawn Colvin. With Buddy Miller, Richard Thompson, Shawn Mullins and dozens of other artists/songwriters. We’ve gone on three of the first four cruises and have never been disappointed. Each year we go we swear it’s the Best Week Ever. Until the next time we go, of course…Disclaimer – I have no connection with the Sixthman organization beyond being a most satisfied customer!

Nice blog. Millers’ “Universal Untied House of Prayer” is a great album. But all the work he’s done with others is the great stuff.
