Don’t bother to digitize your beloved collection of analogue recordings, it’s tedious and involves lots of cables. Instead, play them in the manner they were meant to reproduced: on turntable, reel to reel and cassette. (Wax cylinders and 8-tracks are a little more difficult, but not impossible.) There are still facilities that repair these kind of machines but they are increasingly few and far between, so maintenance and tender loving care are essential. The most important thing is to keep everything as clean as possible. Dust and skin oils are the main culprits, so avoid touching the actual surface of the recording or the reproductive device and use a recommended cleaner to keep things spotless. Be diligent about storing your collection in controlled conditions (if you feel comfortable, so will your music). Keep adding to your library, so you have lots of choices and thus avoid overplaying the same piece. Don’t neglect the paper elements of your collection: use Mylar sleeves and keep out of sunlight. Follow these steps and your music will serve you and future generations with crisp, satisfying reproduction.
