“Why did she die?” asked the nine-year-old, as her father and I discussed the death of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Amy Winehouse[/lastfm] over the weekend.

“Well, we don’t know for sure yet. But, she drank a lot of booze. And smoked. And she did drugs. And when you do those things, you can die. She was really talented. And now she’s dead.” Like many nine-year-olds these days, she seemed most appalled by the smoking, and then quickly moved on to other, more pleasant topics, like how farting is so funny.

With the sound of raspberries in the background, I turned to my husband and said, “I’ve become the dad on ‘Freaks and Geeks‘.”

Others may have deeper insight into another young talent lost to the maelstrom.  I just hear Mr. Weir coming out of my mouth.

Here he is: Harold Weir (played so well by Joe Flaherty),  square harbinger of the people who died, died, died.

Not about people who died, but still hitting the sweet spot of where square meets cool:
