My First Day Phishin’ at UIC Pavilion

Photos: Phish Performs At The…Monday afternoon was a perfect day. Sunny, Warm and clear blue skies to take in the view of the city from the parking lot outside the UIC Pavillion. Thousands gathered for food and drink. Many had set up their tents and a makeshift shopping center was born. Everything from Fishman inspired shirts and water to steak and veggie quesadillas. They all gathered to join WXRT in welcoming Phish to the UIC Pavilion for the first of three shows.
They opened with Back on the Train…fitting since many rode the “EL” train to the show and played Jesus Just Left Chicago, a fine choice considering the venue. They really opened up the jam during Wolfmans Brother and debuted Anything But Me during the first set.
The second set had an organic feel with Sand, Light, Dirt, Waves and to close it out Steam and Fire. The transition from Waves into Undermind was epic. The band returned to the stage for the encore with a message. No one told them to wrap it up…so play on they would. A five song encore, the first in over 20 years started with Camel Walk and brought out the funk. The band continued to strut its stuff all the way to Harry Hood to close it out just before midnight. A great first night after a great first day…with 2 more shows on the way.
