Debbie Harry: Cover Girl

Photos: BlondieNot in a fashion sense (though at age 66 she looks as good as anyone on a magazine cover) but this time in a musical way. During Blondie’s XRT show last week at the House Of Blues, Debbie did a cool cover of the Beastie Boys’ Fight For The Right To Party. Professor Moptop and I were impressed. Then the professor emailed me last night to let me know that they have also been covering The Beatles Please Please Me. Fab! It’s not that Blondie doesn’t have enough great original songs to feature. But it’s good fun to hear them take on someone else’s song.
Debbie with Chris Stein and Clem Burke and a couple of new members will release a new Blondie album tomorrow, and perform on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno October 6th.
But let’s check out a couple of these covers.
This isn’t new for them. In 1980 Blondie did a very successful version of The Tide Is High. The original was written by John Holt for his group The Paragons.
Blondie also covered Denis on their second album. It was an early 1960′s hit by Randy and the Rainbows, and since it was a bunch of guys it was called Denise.
They did a cool cover of Buddy Holly’s I’m Gonna Love You Too in the late 70′s.
Back in 1970 something I remember telling Debbie and Chris that they should cover the Essex hit from 1963, Easier Said Than Done. Like most of the advice I give out, it was ignored. Though if they are reading this now, they might reconsider. Just to jog their memory and yours…..
It’s not too late.
