Most may know Rachael Yamagata for her heart wrenching, my life is over, give me tissues, type ballads that have provided females of all ages a soundtrack to their unfortunate love lives. However, in her first studio album since Elephants…Teeth Sinking Into Heart she offers a glimmer of hope for those that are still in bed eating Ben and Jerry’s straight from the container.

With help from John Alagia and a slew of talented musicians, Rachael Yamagata created her first studio album in 3 years set to release on October 11th. In Chesapeake, Rachael drops her darker, edgier side for a more lighthearted approach. Granted her low, bluesy voice and moody melodies are still in full force, she introduces upbeat instrumentals and carefree lyrics into the mix. Instead of songs filled with anger, self-deprecation and regret she manages to find humor in her own faults; hold the infamous heartbreaker accountable; and shine light on her new-found willingness to take a 2nd chance at love. It’s still very apparent that her emotions run deep as she continues to sing with her heart on her sleeve. However, this time around she does a fantastic job of illustrating that there is hope in heartbreak and fans will have no choice but to believe.
In “Starlight”, she questions whether it’s real love or all a game.
For Rachael Yamagata it wasn’t easy creating Chesapeake. She relied on her loyal fans to take part in a PledgeMusic funding project. Those that helped raise money to fund Chesapeake received an exclusive firsthand look at the making and release of the album. Rachael shared her musical journey by posting behind the scenes blogs, videos, photos, and song snippets only her fans could access. On her pledge site she posted “I’m really looking forward to sharing this entire experience with you. From the bottom of my heart…thanks for pledging”. Rachael’s fans will not be disappointed.
