Terri Tunes Christmas, Part 2

As promised, here’s part two of my Christmas disc for 2011. Part one can be found on this page. Either construct your own CD of these selections, be inspired to make your own, or just make a hot toddy and enjoy the videos. My Christmas present to you, the most wonderful group of radio listeners in the world (I mean that, btw.) One of the tricks to putting together a good holiday mix is to include plenty of standards, but include some songs never heard before. Keeps it as fresh as a sprig of freshly cut holly.
13. ‘Twas On A Night Like This – Peter Seeger
Lovely Pete Seeger performance from his album of Traditional Christmas Carols. You’ll never hear this on an elevator or in a mall. Also on Itunes, but get the whole album. It’s a treasure.

Well , Terri, I’ve gone through your complete list, and I must say, I’m impressed, amazed,
and GREATLY DISAPPOINTED.
I’m impressed with the diversity of musical styles reflected in this set.
I’m amazed that you DIDN’T include “Happy Xmas(War is Over), by John & Yoko.
I’m GREATLY DISAPPOINTED THAT YOU EXCLUDED SOME OF THE TRUE CHRISTMAS CLASSICS.
“Someday at Christmas”–Stevie Wonder
“O, Holy Night”–Luciano Pavarotti
and Terri–Oh,Terri–HOW COULD YOU COMPLETELY IGNORE THE GREATEST CHRISTMAS SONG EVER RECORDED……..
“The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas to You)”—Nat King Cole
Did you know Duke Ellington did a jazz version of “The Nutcracker Suite” ? IT’S TRUE.
I’d like to see the Hubbard Street Dance group do THAT version. You mean you never
heard that at any time when you were doing “Jazz Transfusion” (Yes, I DO remember
THAT far back) ?
I know Aretha did some awesome Christmas tunes, but I guess you never picked up on
those, either.
Oh well. Thank God we live in a country that gives the freedom to choose.
Thank God for giving His Son to our world, proving that He cares enough to send his very best.
That was More than a Hallmark moment, and the Three Wise Men didn’t even
HAVE greeting cards.
Have a “TERRI” Christmas.
Looking forward to your response.

Thanks, Bill. Now you make an 80 minute Christmas disc and I’d be happy to tell you what you left out. Life is full of limitations. The trick is to not let it keep you from doing something. As I pointed out, this particular collection was compiled for my Columbia College students including songs by artists we studied this semester. People that played in town during the semester. Artists we studied from 1920 through 1969. John Lennon we cover Spring semester, and the Beatles were included on this disc. Love the Stevie. Could not include a song by every artist we studied in 14 weeks. Pavarotti….not covered in history of rock and soul class. Nat King Cole would fit, but i’ve used that other years, and i try not to repeat because these go to some of the great support staff as well. Ditto with Duke. And thanks for wondering if I was aware of the piece. In fact I did a lecture on the piece about 9 years ago for the Chicago Symphony. Thanks for remembering my tenure on Jazz Transfusion. Hope you check out Barry Winograd. He’s great. And Aretha, same as Stevie. We cover a lot of genres, and I try to touch on as many as possible. The Supremes, Wilson Pickett, The Platters, Ray Charles and Charles Brown well represented that genre. So that’s my response you asked for. 25 songs. Did the best i could. So much music, so little time. Hope you have a wonderful holiday season and thanks for listening since Marconi invented the radio. Appreciate that.
