Lin Brehmer’s 10 Songs for 2011

[photogallerylink id=111587 align=left]The craft of songwriting fascinates me as much as the guitar solos. I like quirky. I like ethereal. I like emotionally eviscerated. Here are some songs that should be hard to overlook, but some of them have been.

Ryan Adams-Ashes and Fire

[photogallerylink id=109045 align=left]We almost lost this guy as a performer just a couple of years ago. His XRT Holiday Concert For The Kids this year featured a solo performer who galvanized a sold out crowd at The Cadillac Palace Theater into rapturous silence. You know me. I don’t like hyperbole. Much. This is the greatest song ever written.

[photogallerylink id=70575 align=left]Gomez features 3 lead vocalists. Ben Ottewell’s gruff voice is the one most people associate with Gomez. Ian Ball is the guy who has written and sung my favorite Gomez songs including this finale from Whatever’s On Your Mind.

Iron and Wine-Me and Lazarus

[photogallerylink id=66308 align=left]Still my favorite track from one of my favorite albums. “He’s an emancipated pumpkin, he can dance.”

Laura Marling-All My Rage

I had never seen Laura Marling perform live until she opened for Florence and the Machine. More than a star, she’s a constellation.

Tom Waits-Hell Broke Luce

[photogallerylink id=69303 align=left]Mr. Waits take the art of songwriting to another level. To the martial march percussion, the best guitar tandem of the year, Keith Richards and Marc Ribot, back Tom’s take no prisoners vocals. NSFW.

Bon Iver-Calgary

The first time I heard him sing, I said what you said, “How does he make his voice do this?” Best indie falsetto this side of Joseph Arthur.

The Civil Wars-Barton Hollow

Destiny took a listen to these two singers and said, “It would be better if these two crazy kids sang together.

Emmylou Harris-My Name is Emmett Till

[photogallerylink id=85896 align=left]No other song released this year too us deeper into the heart of darkness. A song that needed to be heard, that won’t be.

a better falsetto than Antony Hegarty? I don’t think so.

  2. Teresa says:

Trying to find out name and artist of a song that includes the line “It” or “I” CAN MAKE YOU HAPPY! it’s areal upbeat song that I have heard on XRT several times!

    1. Karla says:

Teresa, the song is by The Kooks. It’s called Junk of the Heart (Happy).
