Marker’s Weekend Live Blues Pick

Nick Moss

Once again the Weekend Live Blues Pick is Buddy Guy performing at Buddy Guy’s Legends. That will be the pick for every weekend this month as Buddy is playing every Thursday through Sunday until the end of January. The purpose of the blues pick, however, is to suggest a great combination of a live blues act and a venue for those wanting to catch some live blues who haven’t yet made their plans for the weekend and the Buddy shows for Friday and Saturday are now sold out. Hopefully, this will also prove helpful to casual blues fans who aren’t already familiar with all the choices that exist in this city, the World Capital of the Blues.

Jimmy Johnson

So the Weekend Live Blues Pick is Nick Moss and The Fliptops with Jimmy Johnson and opening act The Chicago Blues Angels Saturday night at FitzGerald’s Nightclub in Berwyn.  Nick and his band are local Chicago Blues veterans and established national touring artists. “Nick Moss has followed his most critically and commercially successful album to date with the release of Here I Am, a record already drawing raves from peers and mentors, like renowned bluesman Jimmy Thackery, who has praised this new set for “pushing the evolution of his music” with tunes that are “genuine and intense.” Here I Am is bursting with personal growth and the kind of honesty fans have come to expect from Moss, whose unique approach to traditional Chicago blues on five studio records and two live albums resulted in multiple Blues Music Award nominations from the Blues Foundation. Here I Am is the confident statement from Moss the new path he forged on Privileged (also nominated for a BMA, but in the Blues-Rock category) was just the beginning. These 10 new originals combine to create the most diverse album of his career as he pushes his sound, songwriting, and lead guitar work further than ever before.” Joining Nick will be Chicago Blues star, Jimmy Johnson. Jimmy has played with Otis Rush and Otis ClayFreddy King and Albert KingDave Specter and his own brother Syl Johnson. He’s recorded for Delmark, Alligator and Verve Records.

Kate Moss, Samantha Fish

But wait, there’s more. Kate Moss, who’s married to Nick Moss, is also a member of The Chicago Blues Angels and will, therefore, be opening for Nick Moss Saturday at FitzGerald’s. Then she goes to Legends with Samantha Fish to be the opener for Buddy Guy on Sunday night. At the time of this posting tickets remain for this Sunday’s show. The Sunday show times are a couple of hours earlier than the Saturday showtimes for the Buddy shows at Legends so people can get home early and, don’t forget, this Sunday is the day before the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, so many people will have the next day off.

Discovered the Black Oil Brothers- an unbilled opening act at Buddy Guy’s Ledgends last night. Nice delta blues band that turned the crowd from indifferent to… “Who are those guys?” to…”I want one of those free CD’s they’re passing out.”
Unexpected good blues from a local Chicago band. They played music from High Road To Ruin plus some nice covers. Loved the Taj Mahal song. For an easy song to like try Sodapop Blooze–I’ve played it 10 times now. Also liked their …”just happy to be here” attitude.
