It’s the weekend! My advice? Go out and see some great, live blues!  I generally try to help you decide where you might find that perfect combination of venue and performer(s) with the my “Weekend Live Blues Pick,” but this weekend there are a number of shows that all look good that I wanted to mention.

Carl "It's not pink, it's salmon" Weathersby at Blues Fest

This week’s best live blues includes an amazing array that includes many of this Blues Capital’s very best guitar players.

Kenny Kinsey can be found around town a lot. Last week I ran into him at Artis’, The House of Blues Back Porch Stage at the Pro-Jam, and at the Harlem Avenue Lounge. Donald Kinsey, however, is not n Chicago quite as often since he relocated to Michigan. When they’re together with brother Ralph on drums and Nick Byrd on second guitar as The Kinsey Report you should seem them. Tonight, Friday, they’ll be at Buddy Guy’s Legends.

Melvin Taylor is another really amazing guitarist. He’ll be back at Rosa’s Lounge with The Slack Band both tonight and tomorrow.

Rob Blaine shreds his guitar like crazy. He’ll be with his Big Otis Blues at the charming and intimate Harlem Avenue Lounge in Berwyn.

Not only is Carl Weathersby a master and soulful guitar player and singer, but his second guitarist, Corey Dennison, is also one of the best around. They’ll be leading the late night party on the big stage tonight at Kingston Mines. On the other stage, Tuesday night regular Eric “Guitar” Davis performs. Eric is a hot, young up and comer in Chicago Blues who puts on a great, aggressively rocking blues show with a band that includes a couple of horns.

Not strictly blues, but very close, Zydeco master C.J. Chenier returns to Chicago this weekend. C.J. is so popular he needs two nights at FitzGerald’s to supply the demand. Friday night is always the less crowded.

And for some more acoustic leaning blues by an artist with powerful songwriting skills, New York based bluesman Guy Davis will be at S.P.A.C.E. this Sunday evening.

See you out there!
