He sometimes starts in the middle of a story and challenges you to catch up. His characters are often confused and unreliable and untrustworthy, just like the reader is. He fills his books with puzzles and riddles and demands you pay attention. It may even be necessary that you have an education before you turn to page one. His books are meant to be read many times over.  He wrote a novel set in a hyper real Chicago, an epic tale of the far future and a collection based on death, doctors and islands and every possible permutation thereof. He is not only a great science fiction writer, he is one of Americas’ greatest writers period. He also was responsible for a potato chip innovation. He is the pride of Barrington, Illinois, Gene Wolfe, winner of the first Fuller award. Long may he write.
