The power of rock comes from its direct line to the church and gospel and a giant stack of Marshall amplifiers doesn’t hurt, either. (Jim Marshall, RIP.) On this double Holy day of Good Friday/Passover, play these loud:

1. “Jesus Is Just Allright” by the Doobie Brothers. There’s lots of versions of this one, but the Doobies take is the most exciting.

2. “Personal Jesus” by Depeche Mode. Dave Gahan told me the point of view on this track was spiritually ambiguous. Listen to Johnny Cash sing it if you want the conviction of a true believer.

3. “You R Loved” by Victoria Williams.  A miracle in a quavery voice.

4. “Come To Jesus” by Mindy Smith.   A modern day altar call.

5. “Jesus On the Mainline” by Mississippi Fred McDowell. He’s calling on the I (Am) phone!

6. “Waiting for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago” by ZZ Top. “Takin’ care of business is his name.’

7. “Oh Happy Day” by the Edwin Hawkins Singers. An 18th century hymn becomes a smash hit in 1969. On the Buddah label?!

8. “I Just Want to See His Face” by the Rolling Stones. The B side of “Sympathy For the Devil.”

9. “Put Your Hand in the Hand” by Ocean. A soft-rock gospel classic on Kama Sutra records.

10. “Jesus, Etc.” by Wilco. Sung like a prayer by Jeff Tweedy.
