[photogallerylink id=126278 align=left]To celebrate XRT’s 40th anniversary, we’re taking a look back to the 1970s. The Glam rock movement began in 1970s London with hair dye, androgyny, and electric guitars. Ancient magic, and Roaring 20s Hollywood, and low budget Science Fiction aesthetics were some of the key influences on the visual culture of Glam Rock. The sound of Glam comes from boogie, art rock, and beat poetry.

There were many founders of Glam, but few as iconic as David Bowie and Marc Bolan. The founders were not all exclusively musical, and Bowie himself says, “everyone wanted to be like Picasso and Dali.” Sweet, Slade, Roxy Music, and Gary Glitter were some of Glam’s other major players. The popularity of Glam rock dissipated with the closing of the decade, but its influence remains a striking force in music to this day.
