Just hours after Lollapalooza was forced to evacuate Grant Park from the storms that blew into the windy city, Perry Farrell, the founder of the three day music festival and the front man of Jane’s Addiction announced that Lollapalooza was expanding in a very big way. Lollapalooza Israel, occurring in Tel Aviv, is set to take place next summer on August 20 through the 22nd. The announcement comes with not much surprise as Farrell has been expanding the festival over the last three years with Lollapalooza Brazil beginning two years ago and Lollapalooza Chile celebrating its first year this past spring. Lollapalooza Israel is the country’s first major music festival.

Farrell stated that the expansion of the festival comes from missing being on the move; “Lollapalooza began as music’s premier traveling festival. As a musician, I really missed the days when we were on the move. In the last few years we’ve widened our scope, presenting Lolla to the ‘festival generation’ around the world. Next stop- Tel Aviv.” The festival is scheduled mid-week to respect The Jewish Sabbath which is held on Fridays. Yarkon Park, Israel’s largest and most popular park will hold the festival that will feature roughly 50 bands over the three days. However, Jerusalem, Israel’s holy land would also like to participate in the Lolla festivities. Farrell stated “We got a call from Jerusalem, the Holy City, and they want Lollapalooza to be there, too, but it’s going to start in Tel Aviv, and we’re going to do something in Jerusalem. The mayor’s like, ‘We want to bring young people, we want to change the perception of Jerusalem.’ So we’re even talking with them about it.”

Lollapalooza Israel will surely impact the country in a significant way and will hopefully be just as influential as the festivals held in Chicago, Brazil, and Chile. Marc Geiger of WME Entertainment believes that the festival will thrive due to Israel’s sophisticated music market. Hopefully because this is the country’s first major festival, fans from the Middle East and from around the world will jump at this new happening. As for where the next Lollapalooza will pop up, Farrell refuses to say. However he did state that one day he hopes to have a beautiful portfolio of Lollapaloozas to share with his children.
