A biopic on the late great Marvin Gaye?  Sounds interesting.  Supposed to come out next year.  Lenny Kravitz will play Marvin.  What do you think of that choice?  I think I’d vote for Ben Harper, or even Kanye West.  One other concern for fans…it’s going to focus on the 1980’s.  Marvin was one big hot mess then.  Drugs.  Kinky stuff.  He was in serious need of finding some sexual healing.  Then he was shot and killed by his father.

Is that part of the film?  I don’t know.  I’m getting depressed just thinking about it.  Marvin was an amazing artist.  Handsome.  Great singer.  Even displayed a concern for the environment, war, racial justice and poverty before it was the “in” thing to do.  I’d love to see a film about what he was going through when he battled to record and release What’s Going On.  That has stayed on my top ten album list since it was released over 40 years ago.  Or his years with Tammi Terrell.  That could be a cool film.  With the biopic and the forthcoming Motown musical, there will be a lot of attention on the Detroit music that was the Sound Of Young America.  Hitsville USA.

Just hope they don’t muck it up.  Left in the wrong hands it could distort the whole Motown experience.  We’ll see.  Hope they get it right.

In the meantime, watch Standing In The Shadows of Motown.  You’ll be glad you did.

And this is one of my favorite videos in forever.
