After 21 years, the show remains an interesting and singularly unique beast. From the days when I used to go backstage at concerts with a portable cassette deck to record the Holiday greetings myself to the epic readings of Mr. Blotto (this year, highlights of the XRT “morning zoo” from 640AD with a Gregorian version of Rudolph), the Local Anesthetic Holiday spectacular is like nothing else on the radio. Sure, the variance in the quality of submissions is pretty dramatic but my instructions are to “do the best you can” and I remain genuinely appreciative of the work that anybody does on behalf of the show.
At it’s best, the Holiday Spectacular is high art and a supremely pleasant way to while away an hour. At it’s worse…there is no worse. What are you some kind of Grinch? Stand back, Jack, grab a mug of something and catch the Holiday spirit with an hour-long celebration of the season featuring exclusive Holiday greetings from a myriad of Chicago musicians. The 21st Annual Local Anesthetic Holiday Spectacular awaits at the link below (in two parts). Have a great Christmas.
