Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite Get Up & Talk Blues, Harps & More With Marty Lennartz [Listen]

“When it comes to blues, everybody’s got the blues in ‘em.”

That’s what Charlie Musselwhite, harmonica wizard, believes. He and legendary guitarist Ben Harper prove that they have got an astonishing amount of the blues in them with their brand new album “Get Up!” “Get Up!” was just released through legendary Stax Records (home to Otis Redding, Booker T & The MGs and Carla Thomas) on January 29, 2013.

The album features an eclectic mix of R&B, Acoustic blues, Electric blues, Gospel, and Charlie’s harmonica on every track. The two have launched a small tour beginning in March and they’re coming to Chicago’s Riviera Theater on March 3, 2013. They were brought together by John Lee Hooker in 1997 at the recording of “Burnin’ Hell” and it seems it was meant to be. Musselwhite is right when he says their collaboration is “almost on a mystical level. Wow!” They really clicked in the studio and once Hooker saw them working together, he gave them some advice. “John Lee said, ‘You and Charlie have something special,’” Harper told The duo has been planning on working together since that first recording but their hectic schedules kept them from it.

When they finally took the sage advice, it only took about a week or two to record and mix the entire album. They never did more than one or two takes for each song as the music was pouring out of them. When recording their new single, “I Don’t Believe a Word You Say,” they only recorded it a second time purely for recreational reasons. Their time in the studio was a religious experience for both of them where they felt like they’d been to church as they “walked in and floated out.”

Musselwhite, who has worked with legends like Muddy waters and Howlin’ Wolf, knows a true Blues artist when he sees one. When measuring up Ben Harper to other Chicago greats, “Ben has got fire, the imagination and the spirit of blues and he is carrying it on in the 21st century.”
