When Fitz and the Tantrums exploded on the scene in 2010, their modern approach to a very retro soul sound booked them as an instant favorite here at XRT. They weren’t copying, covering, or rehashing an old sound. Instead they took a familiar, nostalgic type of music and made it new again. This, along with the fact that you can’t help but dance in your seat when a tune from 2010’s ‘Pickin’ Up The Pieces’ comes on, has had us dancing on the edge of our seat in anticipation of their sophomore album.
Well the wait is over, soul brothers and sisters. The new single “Out of My League” foreshadows an evolving sound on the new album, More Than Just A Dream, due out May 7th. In an interview with Rolling Stone, front man Michael “Fitz” Fitzpatrick said of the new album, “for us, it’s our second record, and we wanted to grow into our sound, as most bands do on their second record. And with that ability to take chances and experiment, we quickly realized the first rule of thumb was that nobody could say that anything was off the table. We couldn’t say, ‘That doesn’t sound like us!’ We’re just going to write songs, write as many as we can, and take as many chances as we want.”
Judging from the first single on the new album those chances seem to be working in their favor. Check out “Out of My League,” in anticipation of ‘More Than Just A Dream’ due May 7th, below:
