Hump Day Unusual Moment: NRBQ “Who Put the Garlic in the Glue?”

Yes. I have called NRBQ the greatest rock and roll band in the world. In the 70’s Terry Adams, Al Anderson, Joey Spampinato, and Tom Ardolino was the quartet of my dreams. Their early albums were largely ignored as opposed to later albums that were largely ignored. These days Terry Adams leads a version of the band that includes an all Chicago roster. Scott Ligon, Casey McDonough,Conrad Choucroun. And they will be playing live at SPACE in Evanston tomorrow night. On the seminal Scraps album in 1972, I encountered a piece of silliness entitled, “Who Put the Garlic in the Glue?” Silly enough to be this week’s Hump Day Unusual Moment? Hump or Death. The choice is yours.

In 1980, I embarked on a radio journey that brought literally dozens of listeners to their knees. It was the birth of The Hump Day Unusual Moment at a radio station in Albany, New York. Every Wednesday at 9pm I would introduce a recording designed to subjugate our rational thought in the hopes that we might come nearer to true enlightenment. That’s what I said. It was really designed to allow me to play recordings that I normally would never be able to play in a million years. Self-indulgent? Tragically so. Irritating? Only to the non-believers. Educational? I thought so. I have decided in this most sensitive, hair-trigger, psychotic era to bring back The Hump Day Unusual Moment to the morning show page. Maybe on this page I can provide something on which all of us can agree. This moment is unusual.
