UPDATE: Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson tells the Sun Times the department will hire nearly one-thousand new officers over the next two years. Mayor Emanuel wants them to counteract the current use of overtime and the rising tide of gun violence. It’ll cost about 134-million dollars to hire that many new officers; Johnson says he doesn’t know how the mayor plans to pay that bill … A protest against police brutality turned violent in Charlotte, North Carolina, where a black officer shot and killed a black man. 12 officers are injured … they say the victim was armed and a threat; his family says he was holding a book … Federal prosecutors in New York and New Jersey are filing charges against bombing suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami … The Washington Post reports Donald Trump used money from his charitable organization to pay settlements for lawsuits against his for-profit businesses … which would violate tax laws … The Cubs beat the Reds … the White Sox lost in Philadelphia … Showers this morning … turning partly sunny with a high today in the mid-80s.
