Concert Webcast: Tune-Yards Performs On The BlueCross BlueShield Performance Stage WATCH LIVE
By Richard Milne

I remember June of 1993 and I had Local Anesthetic interviews with both Liz Phair and Urge Overkill scheduled on successive Sundays going up against the Bulls gunning for their third NBA title. It then dawned on me; perhaps I should give thought to what Anesthetic listeners may potentially be focused on instead of, you know, tuning in to my particular spot on the radio dial at that moment. However, even armed with that hard earned wisdom, somehow a 7:30pm Bears game AND the last Cub home game of the regular season didn’t deter me from scheduling an interview with someone I think is particularly important in today’s Chicago music scene- Jamila Woods. I’ll tell you how it happened, too. Outside of being a WXRT disc jockey and host of Local Anesthetic, what I really do for a living is book music for events. Everything from the solo piano players that play weekends at the Signature Room to two-day festivals like this past weekend’s Goose Island 312 Urban Block Party. The latter is the biggest, most logistically complicated and time consuming project I play a part in all year. Having been involved since 2012 (starring St. Vincent!), I knew I’d be pretty damn exhausted yesterday and the last thing I needed was figuring out what I’d be doing on last night’s Local Anesthetic. So, I got together with Jamila a couple of week’s ago and taped our conversation in advance. The interview felt good and right when it occurred and listening back last night felt the same. Jamila Woods has an excellent record in HEAVN and she was a gas to speak with. Hey, I may never get the chance to ask another guest “What’s the current state of black women in America?” again anytime too soon. At least until the next time Jamila Woods is a guest on Local Anesthetic. I’m pretty same in thinking that’ll happen with her next record. Until then, dig the convo at the link below. Thank you for listening.

Local Anesthetic Playlist – September 25, 2016 with special guest, Jamila Woods:

  • ”HEAVN”
  • ”Blk Girl Soldier”
  • ”LSD”
  • ”Holy”
