For my money (which always happened to be at least $5), there was no place better in the 1980s than a video arcade. Regency Game Palace and StarCade in Pleasant Hill, CA and Aladdin’s Castle @ Sunvalley Mall in Concord, in case you were wondering. Actually, now that I think about it, other than school, years 6-12 were spent almost exclusively at video arcades, basketball courts, baseball diamonds, 7-11s, McDonald’s, and Melo’s, which is a KILLER pizza place on Contra Costa Blvd. Love that place. Anyway, I got onto the video game subject because of this story I saw the other day.

For those seeking no-frills, back-to-basics rock, look no further than San Diego’s the Soft Pack. The foursome were the center of controversy with their original band name, the Muslims, but the press they’re receiving now from publications like the Los Angeles Times and Pitchfork is all about the music.

Gloomy rockers Interpol have announced a string of live dates across North America ahead of the release of their new album. Well, Goldman Sachs has figured out how to douse the $#!*storm stirred up by a securities trader’s infamous e-mail calling one of his investment products a “$#!**y deal.” Bosses have told traders and investment bankers to stop making those sort of deals. No, I’m kidding. They’ve told traders and investment bankers to stop using cuss words in their electronic communications. #%&!!

Last nights benefit concert starring The Smashing Pumpkins at Chicago’s Metro was nothing short of amazing. There was an outpouring of support for Matthew Leone who, on June 29th, was a brutal victim of violence that left him with severe brain trauma two months after his health insurance lapsed. Matthew intervened to stop a woman he passed on the street from being beaten by her husband when the man turned on Matthew leaving him unconscious on the street. He was taken to UIC Hospital for emergency brain surgery and is now in stable condition awaiting an additional surgery.
Last week, Sheryl Crow amazed the packed crowd at the Ed Sullivan Theater with her cover of The Jackson 5‘s ”I Want You Back.” The song was a surprise encore after Crow played an extended, uninterrupted 50-minute set during her exclusive Live on Letterman online concert.
And if you didn’t catch the show live while it happened, no need for tears–you can watch it now at your leisure!

Johnny Marr might not be a Jarman] brother by blood, but his adoption into UK band the Cribs has made him a part of the family. The ex-Smiths guitarist met Ryan, Gary and Ross Jarman back in 2006, and is featured on the band’s newest album, Ignore the Ignorant.
You’ll be able to see The Cribs live at Lolla, as well as a Budweiser/XRT Lollapalooza Aftershow at Cubby Bear – get free tickets here.

Sure, it’s nice having friends. Someone to hang out with, someone who’ll lend you cups of sugar in a pinch. And now researchers at Brigham Young University suggest having a good network of friends and neighbors will actually help you live longer. They’ve also concluded that not having many friends is as bad for your health as smoking cigarettes, or being an alcoholic.
And all this time, I’ve accused Lin of trying to kill me. Guess I was … wr … wr … oh, just click on for more from the XRT Morning Show … more
Brought Rock For Reading junior board member Rachael Minucciani back for another chat. We talked about Rock For Reading and what they do in Chicago, also got into a little bit about marathon training and how fun it can be. Seriously, I’m not joking, I just wrote the words, “fun” and “marathon training” in the same sentence. No joke! To hear the quick chat and to find my donation page, just click “more.”
