Silversun Pickups’ Brian Aubert: “The Beastie Boys Are Mighty, It’s Sad To Think That Something Can Take Them Down”

Silverlake, California’s dream-pop grunge kids, Silversun Pickups, released their third album, Neck of the Woods, on Dangerbird Records today (May 8). Featuring their newest radio hit, “Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings),” the album has already jumped to the top of the iTunes charts, sitting pretty at number tw0 while magazines like Paste declare the album “the best mainstream rock album of the year.”

To celebrate, the band came to Red Bull Sounds Space at KROQ in Los Angeles and played a five-song set in the Red Bull Sound Space. Before they played popular songs like “Lazy Eye,” “Panic Switch,” and “Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings),” the band was interviewed by Ted Stryker.

The radio host asked how the Silversun Pickups felt about the Beastie Boys and the tragic passing of Adam Yauch a/k/a MCA. Frontman Brian Aubert declared he was currently listening to, saying that if someone says they don’t like the Beastie Boys they are “lying.”

“Well, it’s horrible really. And it affects everybody because the Beastie Boys are mighty and it’s sad to think that something can take them down.” said Aubert. “You know, I think it just makes you realize, ”Wow.’”

“Because they’re current; they’re not like a past thing and I think people get a little callous about when people pass away and they start listening to their albums again,” elaborated Aubert. “No one’s not listening to the Beastie Boys, right? And that’s that. It’s horrible. I think it makes you realize who the enemy really is.”

In addition to the all-star music line-up, the evening will feature a number of special guestsand a live and silent auction featuring signed sports memorabilia and priceless entertainment experiences.

Hot Stove Cool Music was founded in 2000 by Gammons and former Boston Herald sports writer Jeff Horrigan. The biannual event has since raised more than $5 million for Theo and Paul Epstein’s Foundation To Be Named Later and the Jimmy Fund. Foundation To Be Named Later was founded in 2005 by Epstein and his brother Paul as a means to create positive opportunities for disadvantaged children and families.

The Smashing Pumpkins’ performance will be a special one-off appearance for the band, who will be launching a worldwide full headline tour in Australia July 26th in support of the release their seventh studio album, Oceania, on June 19.

Friday morning news broke of The Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch’s passing after a difficult battle with cancer. Within minutes of the announcement, the Twittersphere was a blaze with thoughts and sentiments from fans and celebrities about one of entertainment’s most incredible trailblazers.

Later that evening, at the historic Hollywood Bowl, Coldplay performed a touching version of the Beastie Boys’ “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party).” By all accounts, the tear-filled eyes outnumbered the dry.

So, when KROQ’s Nicole Alvarez sat down with Chris Martin and Will Champion before their headlining appearance at the KROQ Weenie Roast Y Fiesta 2012, she asked how the tribute came about. “Friday you did something very special and touching, unfortunately we lost somebody in music that means a lot to all of us, Adam Yauch… So, where were you when you heard the news and do you remember how you felt right at the time?”

“Well, I don’t know how to talk about it,” responded Martin. “It seems the only thing to do is to sing… sing it.”

“When did you put the tribute together?”

“In the afternoon, said Martin after he thought about it for a second.”

“And, did that song seem like the right one to do?”

“Absolutely, yes,” Martin confirmed. “It’s a weird one cause you think, it’s t too obvious to just play someone’s song if they’d gone. But it’s the only thing we know how to do.”

Donovan Talks Faces, My Morning Jacket And Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame [Watch]

One of the highlights of this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony was Donovan’s performance. He sang “Catch The Wind” and “Sunshine Superman” before being joined by John Mellencamp for “Season Of The Witch.” But another guest who was supposed to be with him couldn’t make it: Jim James, frontman from My Morning Jacket.

James has a solid background in rock history: his band opened for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, he appeared in the Bob Dylan-inspired film I’m Not There and James himself once released an EP of George Harrison covers, under the name “Yim Yames.”

Sadly, due to illness, James wasn't able to make the induction ceremony in Cleveland on April 14. Donovan said that he was disappointed, as he had been looking forward to jamming with the younger musician.

Donovan also said that 2012 was a good year for him to be inducted: he was happy to be included along with The Small Faces and The Faces, as he was friends with both incarnations of the group. He also mentioned The Beastie Boys, as his daughter Ione Skye was once married to their MC and guitarist Adam Horovitz.

The Essential Donovan, a two CD set with 36 of his greatest tracks, is out now. HBO will premiere the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony tomorrow night at 9 pm ET.

Last year’s Lollapalooza headliners and longtime listener favorite, My Morning Jacket will be celebrating 40 years of XRT in an XRT 4D outdoor concert at The Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park on August 22.

O.A.R. Performs Live In-Studio [Watch]

Following the release of the new album King by O.A.R., the band hit the road for their “Extended Stay Tour“. That tour hit smaller venues, multiple nights in selected cities, and it gave the band the opportunity to get back to an intimate, energetic setting. the fun part was they explored their catalog and played in-front of their longtime hardcore fans.

When they started the process for the album, they were in-between labels. Midway through, they signed with their new home, Wind-up Records. The intimacy continued in our studio as Marc, Richard and Benj gave us a special acoustic performance, featuring three songs from King and my chat with them. Click below for the fun.

Tom Morello’s World Wide Rebel Tour Documentary Available Tomorrow For Free

Tuesday, May 1st is International Worker’s Day. And if there was ever day that speaks to Tom Morello, this is it. He is one of the most vocal activists in music today.

Both his bands, Rage Against The Machine and The Nightwatchman are well known for fighting corruption and greed. That is why Morello recently led a group of Occupy Austin members on a peaceful acoustic sing-a-long that ended up attracted thousands of participants.

To lend his support for the modern worker, Tom Morello will give away his World Wide Rebel Tour documentary for free.

The 30-minute documentary was directed by Bobby Roth, known for his work on TV shows like Lost, Prison Break and The Mentalist.

The film features a question and answer session with Morello, mixed with live performances from his 2011 The Nightwatchman album World Wide Rebel Songs.

Joining Morello are familiar faces in rock such as Serj Tankian of System of a Down, Sen Dog of Cypress Hill, Thomas Gobena of Gogol Bordell and more.

“The World Wide Rebel Tour is a virtual tour spanning the entire planet. No one has ever toured 42 countries in one day. Until now. From Malawi to Myanmar, from Uzbekistan to the U.S.A., people’s voices and struggles have made their way into my music. On May 1st, I’m returning the favor with this global rebel rocking throwdown. Free. Everywhere. May Day.” Morello continued, “What is the World Wide Rebel Tour? Remember that old Coca-Cola commercial? ‘I’d like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony…?’ It’s like THAT…but with class warfare.”

The documentary will be available to stream or download for free in its entirety on May 1st via worldwiderebeltour.com.

In a recent interview with KROQ’s Kevin & Bean, Morello joked “I didn’t really choose to be a guitar player. That chose me. And so I’m kinda stuck doing that. I’ve always had to find a way to weave my convictions into my music. And in moments like that, it really feels like I’m doing what I was born to do.”

To that extent, at 12pm on May Day, Tuesday, May 1st, Morello will arrive at Bryant Park in New York City to enlist thousands of musicians and singers to take part in the Occupy Guitarmy. After a rehearsal of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land,” and several other inspirational songs, the Occupy Guitarmy will depart Bryant Park, march through midtown Manhattan and arrive at Union Square, culminating in their performance on stage with Morello.

“On May 1st, I’ll be in the streets of New York City joining the Million Guitar March ‘Guitarmy’ with Occupy Wall Street. Simultaneously, The Nightwatchman’s World Wide Rebel Tour will be unleashed on an unsuspecting planet. It’s time to choose sides people. Are you in or are you out?” That’s what Tom wants to know.

The Allman Brothers’ Jaimoe Talks All That Jasssz [Watch]

As a member of The Allman Brothers Band, Jaimoe has been one half of one of the most enduring drumming teams in rock and roll history. Jaimoe and Butch Trucks have provided the drumming on all of the band’s classic albums, but Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band sees him as sole drummer and bandleader.

Having released two live albums, the group (which also features singer/guitarist Junior Mack) released their debut studio album last year. Renaissance Man features a lot of original material, as well as a cover of “Rainy Night In Georgia” and an update of The Allmans’ classic “Melissa.”

After decades of touring as part of a two drummer band, Jaimoe talked about being in a one-kit group. Jaimoe compared his partnership with Trucks to Allman Brothers’ guitar teams past and present:

“The Wrecking Crew” And The Lost Art Of Studio Recording [Watch]

Is recording “live” in the studio a lost art? Filmmaker Denny Tedesco thinks it may be. He’s directed The Wrecking Crew, a documentary about the group of musicians that included drummer Hal Blaine, bassist Carol King and guitarist Tommy Tedesco (Denny’s father). You may not have heard of The Wrecking Crew, but you’ve heard their music: they played on records by some of the biggest artists of the ’60s, including Jan & Dean, Simon & Garfunkel and The Mamas & The Papas.

Arizona station KOOL-FM recently held a screening of the film with Denny Tedesco and special guest Hal Blaine, and they discussed how Brian Wilson working with The Wrecking Crew on Beach Boys sessions, and how recording music has changed over the past few decades.

The album Tedesco refers to is The Foo Fighters’ Wasting Light, which was recorded in frontman Dave Grohl’s garage (which was converted into a studio), and additionally, it was recorded to tape (as opposed to digitally). ” Named by NPR as an “artist you should know” for 2011, JD McPherson made his Rounder Records debut on April 17th with the release of Signs and Signifiers. JD McPherson lays it all out in his hit single “North Side Gal,” but there’s much more to the story of the blues rocker hailing from Broken arrow, Oklahoma. For example, the video to “North Side Gal” was directed by McPherson himself and shot in Hi-Style studio, which is housed in the attic of producer and bassist Jimmy Sutton’s home here in Chicago. The video features the collection of vintage microphones and an old 1960′s Berlant ¼ inch tape machine used to record the 100% analog album. Says McPherson of the technique: “I have recorded this style of music in the digital realm, and it just doesn’t quite ‘sing’ as much. Slamming that ¼” tape really hard produced the most beautiful distortion I’ve ever heard.”

Gary Clark Jr. On Falling For The Blues – “I’d Never Heard Anything Like That” [Watch]

All eyes on Warner Bros. Records’ newest shining star, Gary Clark Jr. Hailing from Austin, Texas, Gary has no shortage of music coursing through his veins.

Clark’s first weekend at Coachella created so much buzz that his performance for Weekend two pulled in more onlookers than the 5,000 person capacity Gobi Tent could handle. Magazines like Rolling Stone called Clark the “Best Young Gun” and only a few months ago Clark Jr. played the Red, White, and Blues event at the White House.

Upon pulling into the KROQ Coachella House, Clark Jr. was diverted to the gifting suite where he paused for a fitting of a new pair of Dr. Martens. After weaving his way though the vendors, Clark Jr. relaxed under the hot summer sun with KROQ’s Nicole Alvarez and reflected on his big weekend in the desert.

What inspired you to go down this soulful road?

“A friend of mine, Eve, she played guitar before I did. She had a band down the street. They hooked me up with some CDs, Hendrix the Ultimate Experience, Stevie Ray’s Texas Flood album and that was it from there. I quit paying attention to everything else.”

“I thought that form of expression, the heart and soul and the energy that goes into it…I’d never heard anything like that…the way those guys played the guitar and let everything loose, it was kind of inspiring for me. If I’m listening in headphones and I hear those records it still hits me the same way it did fifteen years ago.”

When did you find your style?

“Finding my style… I don’t know. I’m just kinda open to everything. I just figure why not? It’s just music you know. I grew up in Austin, Texas… it’s the live music capital of the world so I was surrounded by anything and everything.”

“When I was first started playing on the scene, I was going to blues clubs, I’d play straight up 1-4-5, B.B. King’s songs… I’d go back to my house and I’d have my drum machine and I’d be sampling records and trying to cut it up on the turntables.”

Speaking earlier this week with PE.com, Clark Jr talks about the Coachella crowd.

“The energy from a festival is its own thing. All of that energy from the crowd fuels the set in a massive way that carries on like a wave. At a club there’s an intimacy with the crowd I can share with the people as a whole but the individuals in the room as well.”

St. Vincent Brings Heavenly Alternative Punk Rock Vibes “Thank You Coachella, You’re F’ing Awesome!”

29-year-old Annie Clark of St. Vincent is, as a friend aptly put it, our ultimate “girl crush.” Wearing tights under leather shorts with a black sleeveless collared shirt and bobbing her precious brunette curls in time to the shredding of her electric guitar, Clark, who started her musical career as a member of the Polyphonic Spree, is both delicate and defiant, pretty and punk rock.

And Clark had a maternal instinct. After playing a few songs, the frontwoman checked in with her lively, devoted audience. “Hey Coachella. You guys OK,” she asked. “Like, medically speaking are you OK? Show of hands. I don’t like to ask this question, but it’s not a cheesy rock question. Who amongst you got a third degree tan?…You guys all deserve medals, badges, or just a f**king case of water. You guys get MVP all the way.”

Clark, who sang earlier in the night with indie-folk maestro Andrew Bird, played songs “Marrow,” “Cheerleader,” “Chloe in the Afternoon,” “Now, Now,” “Black Rainbow,” “Cruel,” and a punky tune that she had just released today for Record Store Day.

“This song came out today. It’s Record Store Day. An Important Day. Not to imply that it’s more important than other days. I’m sure there’s other days that take the cake. But still this song came out today, so it’s on a seven inch somewhere.”

Clark has an adorable habit of doing a little shuffle before smacking her zither or grabbing her microphone in an impassioned fervor.

At one point, Clark changed guitars and picked up the wrong one. “Coachella, this is live music and sometimes you pick up the wrong guitar and it’s not in the right turning. Let’s try that again.” She also played a cover called “She Is Beyond Good and Evil” from British pop-punk band The Pop Group. Clark told a story about how frontman Mark Stewart asked to cover the song when St. Vincent went through London and brought Clark a tiny dish scrubber shaped like Sid Vicious called “Sid Dishes.”

“Oh, this is what’s become of punk rock,” said Clark with a sigh, mimicking Stewart.

After playing the cover, Clark, who stage dove last weekend at Coachella, sprayed the audience with water and then jumped back into the crowd, losing her shoes in the process.

“Thank you Coachella,” said Clark in her sweet voice. “You’re f**king awesome.”

“On days like this, do you ever say ‘Yeah, we should rethink the whole suit thing?,” KROQ’s Kat Corbett asks Fitz and the Tantrums’ frontman Michael Fitzpatrick.

“Oh yeah, every summer festival I regret that decision,” Fitzpatrick says.

With their Coachella performance set to start at 4:45PM, in the searing triple digit heat, the band decided dresses down from their normal very business-like attire. Fitz and the Tantrums could be one of the most stylish bands on the road today. “There’s air-conditioning in that vest,” jokes Noelle Scaggs about bass player Joseph Karnes, who’s wearing a vest with loosened neck tie peeking through.

“I’d like to see the Fitz and the Tantrums fashion line, between the dresses, the suits…” advises Kat.

“We’re waiting for H&M to call us,” suggests Fitzpatrick.

The band has been touring and promoting their second full-length, critically acclaimed album Picking Up The Pieces, for nearly two years. When Kat jokes that they’re one of the laziest bands on the planet, Fitzpatrick explains “We’ve actually just finished up our touring for this record cycle and now we’re held up in Silverlake just writing like demons. We’ve written about 20 songs and when we get back from Mexico City we’re going back in the studio to start working on the next record in May.”

Fitz and the Tantrums have enjoyed recent publicity from Criminal Minds, CBS’ hit crime drama. Typically, TV shows just use snippets from popular songs. But that was not the case with ‘Money Grabber,’ where producers not only used nearly the entire song, they went one step further. “It’s a music video for serial killers,” jokes Fitzpatrick. “We didn’t know. We all tuned in to watch and it was literally the opening sequence inter-cut with the serial killer and our music video playing on a TV in the house with the poor souls that got murdered. It was kind of dark and scary but exhilarating all at the same time”

Givers On Misunderstood Lyrics To ‘Up Up Up,’ “It’s Whatever You Need It To Be” [Watch]

The Givers are truly that. Nothing is held back on stage. After expending what appeared to be several lives worth of musical energy on the KROQ Coachella House stage, the foursome hopped down for a cheerful afternoon interview.

“I feel like I’m in an oven, rather than a slow cooker,” starts off frontman Taylor Guarisco. The band from Louisiana are no strangers to high temps, but the dry desert heat is not something they were prepared for. Yet their youthful enthusiasm supersedes their bodies’ desire for a cooler climate.

Givers had the recent fortune of having their single “Up Up Up” covered by the cast of Glee. KROQ’s Kat Corbett inquires, “How does that happen? What goes on when you get that phone call?”

“I think I saw the Facebook post before I got a phone call. That was probably the biggest honor we’ve gotten.” responds bassist Josh LeBlanc.

“There’s a website that posted lyrics for “Up Up Up” and one of the lines is ‘Get yourself some land with your old man,’ and I think all these people have been going to this website to find lyrics and the lyrics should be ‘Get yourself aligned with your mind.’” Amused, Kat responds, “That has nothing to do with land and a man!”

“It’s whatever you need it to be. If the kids need some land with a man, then get the land with the old man,” chirps Guarisco.
