Time-traveling show features musical history. Lights, Cameras, Ralph!

Bad Examples frontman Ralph Covert is expanding his 10-record “Ralph’s World” universe. Chicago’s fave kid rocker has taped a half-hour television pilot for the preschool set.

“Ralph’s World: Time Machine Guitar,” stars Covert as himself—a hippy-dippy family guy and musician—who lives with three puppets in a cartoony, TV-shaped tree house. The quartet travel through time via Covert’s souped-up guitar to hang (and occasionally jam) with the likes of Bach and Beethoven.

Circus Zircus – All Throughout May

Chicago’s Children’s Museum at Navy Pier
Whether you crave an audience, prefer being behind-the-scenes, or just love to clown around, there’s something for everyone at Circus Zirkus. In the busy backstage area, you can practice your tumbling, juggling and balancing skills, create a circus poster, swing on the Flying Trapeze and amaze on the Spinning Hoop.Then, it’s time to wow the crowd in the performance area as you spin Tricky Plates, swirl Twirling Balls, show off your dazzling costume and entertain as a wacky clown. Or, you can sell hot dogs and ice cream, staff the ticket booth and cheer from the bleachers. Circus Zirkus provides an abundance of props and apparel—including real clown shoes—for hours of imaginative play.

Chicago Cinco de Mayo Festival- May 4, 2012- May 6, 2012

26th Street and Kostner Avenue, Chicago
Community celebration in the Little Village neighborhood features food, live music, arts & crafts and activities for kids and families. Runs 6-11 p.m. Friday, and 2-11 p.m. Saturday-Sunday from May 4-6.


Acorn Express at The Morton Arboretum

Morton Arboretum, 9 am-5 pm
See gardens, woodlands, wetlands and prairies in a tram tour. 60-minute and 30-minute tours explain the rich Arboretum history, and describe the trees and plants you’ll see. There’s also an opportunity to see lovely wildlife in a native habitat.


Snoozeum- May 11th-May 12th

Museum of Science and Industry
Enjoy the chance to visit the Museum of Science and Industry after dark. Participate in science activities and make science toys, go on a scavenger hunt and unroll sleeping bags next to a 727, giant heart or steps away from a toy-making factory.


National Train Day at Union Station -May 12th, 11am- 4pm

Features live entertainment, interactive exhibits, culinary demonstrations, model trains, tours of Amtrak, freight and commuter trains, and private railroad cars. Kids can build model trains, learn about trains and railroad travel, and compete for surprise giveaways happening in the All Aboard Explorer’s kids zone. Some of the world’s best model trains will be on display so families can come get detailed looks at these miniature masterpieces.


MythBusters: The Explosive Exhibition

Museum of Science and Industry
The exhibition uncovers the truth behind popular myths by mixing scientific method with gleeful curiosity and old fashioned ingenuity to create hands-on, interactive experiences for guests of all ages. Guests learn about myths, the MythBusters and what experimenting is all about by participating in a series of fun, hands-on experiences and live demonstrations. Experiments cover topics such as flight, friction, gravity, speed and combustion. The exhibit will showcase a Blueprint Room, a Workshop, and a Live MythBusters Demonstration Stage.


Long Grove Chocolate Festival

¼ mile north of Routes 53 and 83, Long Grove
Fill a day – or the entire weekend – with chocolaty treats, demonstrations and workshops, live music and shopping in Long Grove. Festival runs from May 4-6.


Beaglefest Chicago 2012 -May 19, 2012

Hinkley Park, Park Ridge
Beaglefest is a wonderful opportunity to run with the hounds, or sit with the hounds, or play with the hounds. It is a laugh filled afternoon of family entertainment. It is a chance to give back, for all of that beagle love you enjoy, to contribute to our efforts to save more of these wonderful creatures. So, bring your folding chairs or blankets and come and relax, hang out with all the beagles, and have a great afternoon. Whether you are an owner, previous adopter, interested in adopting or just love beagles, this is the place to be!


Chicago Kids and Kites Festival– May 19th

Cricket Hill in Lincoln Park.
As part of the public activities to mark the NATO Chicago Summit, NATO is partnering with the City of Chicago to present the 14th Annual Kids & Kites Festival. NATO is providing 5,000 kite kits for children as well as pictures of flags and fun facts about representative countries to help inspire children as they decorate their kites. In addition, the festival will also feature a workshop on the history and tradition of Afghan fighter kites. Chicago Kite, a Chicago-based retailer that specializes in kites, will sell kites, give tips and advice on how to fly kites and its professional flyers will demonstrate their skills with oversized and amusingly shaped kites. Also, the Big Kite Candy Drop will take place during the afternoon, weather permitting.
