About Lin

Nothing much survives from Brehmer’s high school years except rumor and innuendo. He distinguished himself as the starting pitcher for the varsity baseball team from 1969 to 1972. He also spent winters in a Kelly-green Speedo as a member of the McBurney swim team.

The NATO summit is attracting a diverse group of protestors to the Chicago area. While there may be a general consensus concerning what exactly the focus of the protest is, it would be safe to generalize by saying the protestors are against bad things and they are in favor of really good things. My early rock and roll education took place during a particularly turbulent period of time so for me rock and roll was largely the music of protest.

Here, then, are some protest songs past and present that are as relevant today as the day they were released. Are there songs in your life that provided commentary, eloquent or otherwise? Check in below.View Lin’s Playlist

By now you have heard or seen the news clip. President Obama voiced his support for same-sex marriage at almost the same time North Carolina was providing a legal definition of marriage.

This morning I recalled a famous scene from The West Wing so I played a portion of it on the XRT Morning Show. There was enough curiosity about the origin of the audio that I’ve provided a link to the full scene.Watch Video Below

The “Super Moon” has nothing to do with your high school antics. Without dazzling you with my command of astrophysics, I can tell you this. Tomorrow, the moon will be much closer to the planet earth than it usually is. What does that mean? Several things. More werewolves. Green grass and high tides. And, here’s the best part, the moon will look freaky science fiction big. Take the folding chairs outside and listen to this “Super Moon” playlist I have crafted for you. I guarantee the moon will seem even more beautiful. All you have to decide is whether you mix up a fresh batch of margaritas or continue your Kentucky Derby mint julep tribute.View Lin’s Playlist

Chicago sports fans have endured more than most. Why? I think it’s the legacy of certain Chicago sports teams. Injuries are part of the professional sporting landscape. A combination of timing and severity determine the impact these injuries will have for the athlete and the fan. What about the top 5 Chicago sports injuries? I’m not talking about Steve Trout falling off the stationary bicycle. Hey, it happens. I’m not talking about Sosa’s sneeze or the unwatchable Robin Ventura ankle injury at home plate which was almost as bad as his encounter with Nolan Ryan. I’m talking about the potential game changers.View Lin’s Playlist

As many of your favorite DJ's can tell you, the 80's were a blast at XRT.

This weekend on XRT, it’s forward into The 80′s. It got some of us talking about songs that we were sure would take over the world, but that did not.

These are songs that may not be obscure to anyone who listened to XRT in the 80′s. In the rest of the world, these songs did not really exist. If you were to mention these songs to people elsewhere they might look at you, to borrow a phrase, as if lobsters were climbing out of your ears. The 80′s were a whole lot more than just Michael Jackson. As many of your favorite DJ’s can tell you, the 80′s were a blast at XRT. Does anyone remember The Mammoth Music Mart at the Old Orchard Shopping Center?  Under a gigantic tent, some 500,000 used record albums and 45′s and 78′s would be spread out in bins.  It was an annual fundraiser for the Les Turner ALS Foundation and the event drew record collectors from all over the Midwest.  Dick Clark was the Honorary Chairperson of this event for over two decades.  In 2002, I was invited to the ribbon cutting with WGN icon Roy Leonard.  I remember how thrilled how I was to meet the host of American Bandstand.  Dick Clark had been many things over the years, but to music fans of a certain age, he was the guy who let kids rate the records.  ”It has a good beat and you can dance to it.”  And here he was in Skokie talking about records.  WXRT  donated thousands and thousands of albums to the Mart over the years.  We  promoted the event with live broadcasts and appearances.Read More, View Photos
