Black Sabbath Drummer Bill Ward Won’t Play Reunion Shows

Starting with Tony Iommi’s sudden lymphoma diagnosis in January, it’s not been so easy for Black Sabbath’s original members to get the old band back together. And the reunion roadblocks just keep coming. Drummer Bill Ward, who, in February, threatened to back out of the Sabbath reunion unless he was presented with a “signable contract” from management, has done just that.

In a new letter published today (May 15) on his official website, Ward says he, regrettably, will not participate in Black Sabbath’s upcoming shows. This decision was reached following an incident involving the band’s hometown concert in Birmingham, England on May 19 – a gig Ward found about through an Internet ad on April 30, not his bandmates. Ward explains that his lawyer contacted Sabbath’s representative last week only to be told that he could “come to the UK, play for free and see how the first show goes.”

It wasn’t the lack of pay that bothered Ward, it was the no-strings-attached mentality of “see how it goes.” This is when Ward decided to step away from the reunion, keeping true to his word about requiring a signable contract – something he says he’s been waiting on for a year.

“I know in my heart I couldn’t have done these concerts by agreeing the terms suggested,” Ward wrote. “I made a solemn vow after the last European and Ozzfest concerts that I would never again enter into what was, in my opinion, a totally unsatisfactory contract. I have to stand for something, and as painful as it is, I’m doing it.”

It’s true that Ward has sparred with Black Sabbath management over contracts previously. For an Ozzfest 2004 tour, Sharon Osbourne originally announced that Mike Bordin, Faith No More drummer and the former drummer in Ozzy’s backing band, would replace Ward due to contract disputes – yet Ward somehow ended up on the tour. In 1997, however, Bill Ward reportedly wasn’t invited to participate when Ozzy reunited with Black Sabbath for his Ozzfest tour, replaced by Bordin.

Additionally, Ward says he had been asked last month to play drums on just three songs during Black Sabbath’s set at U.K.’s Download Festival on June 10. This was an offer he turned down, due to the uncomfortable prospect of watching another drummer fulfill the duties he originally served. “I was not prepared to watch another drummer play a Sabbath set, while I was to play only three songs,” he said.

But Ward does not seem to draw any amount of pleasure from his decision, using his lengthy letter to sincerely apologize to fans and at one point, acknowledge that drummers don’t always get their due when it comes to licensing royalties.

“This statement is even more painstaking to write, as I was particularly excited to play alongside Tony Iommi after the recent treatments he underwent,” he wrote, acknowledging the Sabbath guitarist’s lymphoma diagnosis.

Ward continued: “I hold no malice or resentment towards the other band members. I love them; I’m tolerant of them; I’m frustrated with them, as they may be with me. My fight has never been with them. I’ll love them forever. In my opinion, nobody wins this time; the band doesn’t win; the fans for an original lineup don’t win.”

Ward did not specifically address Black Sabbath’s upcoming headlining appearance at Lollapalooza in August. While he will not perform at upcoming Black Sabbath shows, he said he “will remain with an open mind and a position of willingness to negotiate ‘signable’ terms with Sabbath’s representatives in the future.”

” Perry Farrell Perry explains, “Black Sabbath was my pet choice for Lollapalooza. My very first car was a used Camaro and that car had an 8-track in it. My big brother gave me a bunch of 8-tracks and one of them was Black Sabbath’s ‘Paranoid’. Just the thought that the guys who started heavy metal. The original members are all going to be together again. I’m just envisioning the earth shaking and quaking because the metal is so heavy.”

Ah, the maestro of Lollapalooza himself. Spiritual godfather and festival founder Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction made his annual appearance here at the XRT backstage broadcast area to talk with Marty Lennartz. Hear Perry talk about the festival’s expanded menu, the “Perry” deejay stage, and how Lollapalooza is literally bigger than ever! Originally creating Lollapalooza in 1991 as a farewell tour for Jane’s Addiction, the event has since morphed into a festival juggernaut, a destination for concert lovers of all ages, all tastes, and all origins. But like many alt rockers of the 80s and 90s, Farrell got his start on Los Angeles’ grimy Sunset Strip, jamming with various acts before forming Jane’s Addiction with Dave Navarro and company. For six years, the group dominated the scene with intense stage shows, led by Farrell’s drug-fueled screeches and manic dancing, as well as awesome studio albums that made occasional appearances on rock radio.

Lollapalooza goes way beyond the usual festival food. Culinary Ambassador to Lolla, Graham Elliot stopped by to discuss how independent, chef-driven Chicago restaurants are supplying our menu for the weekend.

Speaking of food, getting to Grant Park for the big show is a piece of cake. Public Transportation is at your finger tips with a full rainbow of ‘L’ stops, bus routes, and Metra stations within walking distance. If you are going green and riding your bike there are plenty of bike racks available outside of the box office area. Make sure to bring your own lock because bikes as well as scooters and skateboards will not be permitted past the festival entrance. Cabbin it? Have your cabby drop you off at Michigan and Congress, close to the box office. There is no parking on festival grounds, but there are four underground parking garages nearby.

Fun, sun and rock and roll. Brazil has it all now thanks to Lollapalooza.

The music festival, so well-known to music loving North Americans, celebrated its first year in Brazil and the line-up on April 7th and 8th boasted artists like Foo Fighters, Skrillex, MGMT, Cage the Elephant, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Foster the People and more.

Originally conceived as a farewell tour festival for Jane’s Addiction by Perry Farrell, Bill Graham, and others, alt-glam rockers, Jane’s Addiction, also played the festival in Brazil.

Farrell said in a statement that the people of Brazil were very vocal about who they wanted to see on the 2012 Lollapalooza Brazil line-up.

“The people of Sao Paulo have been very active–twittering me whom they want to see in the 2012 Lolla lineup,” Farrell explained. “Judging by all the requests, they are going to erupt. We really delivered for them. Now, I want them to show me how you party in Brasil!”

Are you still wondering why there was no snow this winter? We think it’s because the majority of the year’s precipitation came down in the monsoon on the Sunday of last August’s Lollapalooza. In one of the most fun afternoons on record, Chicago’s backyard was converted from the lovely Grant Park to a literal bucket of mud. Not to worry though, after two months of ground work, including a heaping amount of sod, mulch, and new flowerbeds, and a one million dollar tab picked up by Lolla’s production company C3 Presents, the grounds are back and ready for action. Venue? Check. Next on the list? Entertainment.

On the way into the city this morning, CTA commuters were treated to Lolla lyric teases on video screens from festival promoters, C3 Presents. So far, Chicago El riders have spotted the lyrics, “I Won’t Let Love Disrupt, Corrupt, Or Interrupt Me,” “I Fink U Freeky,” “Do The D.A.N.C.E.,” and “I Got A Test For You” followed by #Lolla.

Now the same account that blew the cover on Lolla last year has spilled the beans about this summer’s artists — or at least that’s what they’re saying…

According to @LollaLeaks, who bills himself as an anonymous Lollapalooza insider, the 2012 headliners will be Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers, Beck, Beyonce, and Sonic Youth.

” Perry Farrell It was 20 years ago when Perry Farrell’s brainchild, Lollapalooza, ushered in a new and exciting way to experience the best of modern rock. Now, Lolla has become the best three days of the year in Chicago and an international phenomenon, branching out to Brazil in 2012 and coming back to Chile for a second time.

The two festivals will share some – but not all acts – on their bills.

Photos: Foo Fighters Close Out…South America once again with the second edition of Lollapalooza Chile in O’Higgins Park in Santiago, March 31 – April 1, 2012, and will venture across the continent for the first-ever Lollapalooza Brazil at the Jockey Club in São Paulo, April 7-8, 2012. Lollapalooza Chile and Lollapalooza Brazil will both welcome the Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys, Skrillex, Calvin Harris, MGMT, TV On The Radio, Bassnectar, Band of Horses, Thievery Corporation, Peaches, Cage the Elephant, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Friendly Fires, Foster the People and Tinie Tempah.

Some Of Our Favorite Photos From…Fresh from triumphing over the elements with this year’s Lollapalooza U.S. headline set of a lifetime, Foo Fighters are sure to turn equally dynamic main stage closing sets in both Brazil and Chile– performances that will mark the Foos’ first trip ever in Chile as well as their first Brazilian appearance in over a decade.

Festivalgoers in Chile will experience rare treats with Bjork, and Avicii, as well as an eclectic collection of bands, including progressive rockers, Los Jaivas, the socially conscious Juana Fe, punk rock giants, BBS Paranoicos, and the Chilean revelation of rockorgánico, Camila Moreno.

Lollapalooza Brazil will host the triumphant return of Jane’s Addiction and a special blend of iconic indie rockers from every region of the country, including Plebe Rude from Brasília, Wander Wildner from Porto Alegre and Cascadura from Salvador. “The people of Sao Paulo have been very active–twittering me whom they want to see in the 2012 Lolla lineup,” states Farrell.

Photos: Foster The People at ACLFrontman Mark Foster thought that the name of the band, brought on by a typo, evoked images of nurturing and caring, and Foster the People has certainly lived up to that standard, taking care of the Billboard charts, download sales, and radio airwaves across the country. The band is best known for “Pumped Up Kicks”, a rockin’ fun song from their debut album Torches that reached number one on the Billboard Alternative charts, number 3 on the Billboard Rock charts, and number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100. Not bad for their first album, eh? Well, they’re not done yet.
