The Smoking Popes

A quick taste of the new Chicago music you can expect to hear on this week’s Local Anesthetic, Sunday night at 7:30 here on XRT. As has been customary the last couple of Smoking Popes‘ releases, I’ll have the pleasure of presenting the broadcast premier of a new track on Local Anesthetic. “Hey Renee” is one of two new tunes on the Popes’ new Complete Control Sessions EP, an in-studio live set that you’re gonna dig.

Jon Drake and The Shakes

It’d be a profound disappointment if the righteousness of the tunes didn’t match up with the grooviness of the band name. Thankfully, the sound of JDATS is not only righteous; it’s outasighteous.
Hungry Freaks, Daddy

The Damn Choir

Devoting three of the five Sundays in April to new Chicago music has really 1) afforded me the opportunity to clean the slate (and office) of tunes I’ve been meaning to get on the air and 2) forced me to really get a handle on all the music in my office. Today (Saturday morning), I’m going thru everything and finding discs that I’ve been deciding on since last November! “Deciding on” should be read as “there’s not a lot of anything interesting going on here but maybe this band’s charm will reveal itself if I give it another listen next week…”

Maps & Atlases

First off, gotta go with Maps and Atlases and the new set Beware and Be Grateful. This is a big league effort for the Chicago quartet, full of ideas and hooks and sharply executed music. The kind of music that makes me wonder how anybody can pull off something so cool. Yes, I’m already formulating many questions for when they’ll be a guest on Local Anesthetic in May.

The Chi-Lites

With a history that dates back to the late ’50′s, Chicago’s Chi-Lites (originally the Hi-Lites) segued from their original doo-wop roots to their signature soft soul sound over the course of a decade. Their first single was released in 1964 and first LP in 1969. Their biggest chart success came in 1971-72.
Have You Seen Her?

7th Heaven

OK, so I’m a Pelican geek. OK, so the beginning riff of the new EP’s “Lathe Biosas” is straight off Master of Reality. None of that means this isn’t one of the best things this “thunderous post-instrumental outfit” has done.
