June 19, 2020

The year is 2020 and both Bob Dylan and Neil Young have released new albums.

A sentence that may have seemed unfathomable 40 years ago is a reality today as the legendary musicians both have new records.

In Neil Young’s case, it’s a previously unheard album from one of the most highlighted periods of his career. For Bob Dylan, it’s a continuation of his unmatched ability to provide social commentary about times in crisis.

Bob Dylan’s latest album Rough and Rowdy Ways is his 39th in his storied career. It marks Dylan’s first album of original songs since his 2012 record Tempest. Since that time, he has released a series of albums covering traditional pop standards.

On March 27, he surprised fans with a 17-minute track called “Murder Most Foul” reflecting on the assasination of President John F. Kennedy. The song was Dylan’s first to hit number one on a Billboard chart.

“Greetings to my fans and followers with gratitude for all your support and loyalty across the years. This is an unreleased song we recorded a while back that you might find interesting. Stay safe, stay observant and may God be with you,” he wrote in a statement at the time.

Homegrown is a previously unreleased album that Neil Young fans have been waiting nearly 46 years to get their hands on.

The album was recorded in 1974 and early 1975 and was intended to serve as a bridge between his classic albums Harvest and Comes A Time. At the last minute, Young pulled the plug on the album and opted to release Tonight’s the Night instead.

Rumors began circulating 2010 that the album was being remade for a release. It took nearly a decade, but Homegrown is finally here.

If you’re looking to add to your new music Friday playlist, check out a pair of albums from two of the greatest musicians of all time. Be sure to turn it up to eleven.
